Rising Business Spotlight:  Boiano Dental Group

By Janie Rosman

When the braces he endured during his teenage years profoundly altered his life, Dr. Giovanni Boiano knew he’d found a calling. “They changed my smile and gave me the confidence I felt I was missing,” Boiano said.

An achiever who sets personal goals, Boiano bypassed opportunities to play college football and focused on his dental aspirations. He established a practice in Morris Park, the Bronx, in 1996 after earning a combined BA-DDS degree from New York University. He later moved the office to Throggs Neck and, in January, he opened a second office in Eastchester to include pediatric dentistry.
“I treat the patient as a whole person and am interested in more than the teeth, since the person has to be happy,” he said.  A Fellow Honoree in the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantology, Boiano pays it forward by teaching dentistry to residents. “I think a crucial part of any profession is preparing the future leaders and practitioners.”

Recently we spoke with Boiano about his practice and business philosophy.

What have been some stepping stones along your career path?
In addition to being selected for a seven-year program combining undergraduate and graduate studies, I had experiences in dental school — a mentor included me in a pilot study for doing implants and collecting data — and in general practice residency that exposed me to areas of treatment outside the regular curriculum.

If you could change one career decision you’ve made, what would it be?
I have never really thought about that, considering I love what I do. If I have to say anything, [it’s that] I would still be in healthcare because I always enjoyed helping people.

What is your definition of success?
I think it’s a combination of a healthy balance between work and family life, excelling in a career that you love and giving back to the community at the end of the day.

What are the three most important things a person needs to be successful? Why?
Determination, since business and life challenges may knock you down, so you get up and
try harder.

Energy, because sometimes it’s hard to get everything done on your plate during the day, so you have to dig deep inside to keep moving forward.

Commitment, since once you have established your goals, you need to commit to reach or beat them.

How do you adapt to challenges, in light of the economy?
I try to alleviate the fear brought on by a trip to the dentist. Since the economy has stalled, I appreciate the fact that families have a little less at the end of every month and have not raised prices in the last five years.

What suggestions would you offer someone who wants to open a business?
Owning your own business may give you a feeling of freedom, success and achievement; however, it’s not always easy. Growing a business takes a great amount of determination and drive — and overtime.
